Wisconsin's, The Great River Road, is a beautiful and well travel drive, but I would concentrate on the road between Maiden Rock and Pepin WI.
Maiden Rock:
There are only a few businesses and most quite old, but there are a few unique shops. Honey Hill Apiary, Arnie's Wood Craft, Pepin Farm Pottery & Guest House Smiling Pelican Bake Shop, Swan Song Contemporary Arts, Secret Heart Gallery. Maiden Rock is undergoing significant renovation with the help of a state-housing grant.
Just outside of town is Rush River Produce. Located at W4098 200th Ave Maiden Rock, WI. It is where you can pick 14 different types of blueberries, red and white currants and gooseberries. It is open four days a week; Thursday through Sunday, 8 am until 2 pm, July and August.
Stockholm, WI:
Stockholm is where I would spend most of my time. It is a quaint town with a lot to offer.
I would stay at the Cottage in Stockholm if there were 2 couples or the River Road Inn, in the Carrage house, if there are only 2 of you. Both are located on hwy 35 with spectacular views of Lake Pipen.
You could spend 2 days going through all the shops, galleries and restaurants in Stockholm. But there are 2 places just outside of town you don't want to miss.
The Pizza Farm
N2956 Anker Ln, Stockholm, WI
There is no table service, they don't serve drinks, have plates, utensils, or even napkins and the toilet is an outhouse. What they do have is the best brick oven pizza. All the spices, sauces and meats are grown on the farm. It is open Tuesday night only (if you can find it). You may need to ask a local.
Maiden Rock Apples:
W12266 King Ln, Stockholm, WI Open daily Wed-Sun 10am-6pm
80 acre orchard set in the bluffs when you can pick your own or visit the retail store at the orchard. They had over 25 Varieties of Apples, plus Pumpkins, Apple Cider, Caramel Apples, Apple Pies, Jams & Jellies. They offer Hay Rides, Maze and Picnics. They also have a store in downtown Stockholm - The Good Apple. It offers Wisconsin Cheeses, Delicious Jams, Jellies, Mustards, Unique Mixes, Sundries, Wine and Cheese Tools, Apples, Cider and Wines. Orchard opens August 27 through Dec., 10am - 6pm.
Pepin, WI:
This is the birthplace of Laura Ingalls Wilder, the Little House in the Big Woods. There is a replica of the Ingalls log cabin. A Laura Ingalls Wilder Park, with a historical marker. Also the museum should not be missed, they have many interesting artifacts on display.
Although Pepin is alittle down on it's luck there are a few shops and restaurants located here. |
